Exercise 50
Tôny is a teacher of English. In the school holidays he and his friend Lûk are checking all the things in Tôny’s classroom. What are they saying?
Tôny:
How many copies of Jane Eyre are there on that shelf?
Lûk:
Thirty five.
Tôny:
Thirty five? Aren’t there forty?
Lûk:
No. There are thirty five. Is there a problem?
Tôny:
No problem. Five copies are missing, it seems.
Lûk:
And there’s a box of pencils here. Count all the pencils?
Tôny:
Oh no. There’s no need for that. Here are eight A4 notepads in the drawer. Is there any paper in the cupboard too?
Lûk:
Yes. In the cupboard there’s a packet of paper for the printer, five hundred sheets.
Tôny:
I’ll order some more. It’s only enough for two weeks.
Lûk:
(tired of the work) What’s the time now?
Tôny:
Eleven o’clock.
Lûk:
I’ll be going soon. To meet a friend at twelve in the town centre.
Tôny:
Oh dear! The job isn’t yet finished at all.
Lûk:
Maybe we can carry on tomorrow.
Tôny:
(speaking in a low voice) I’ll be carrying on today, without help …
Exercise 51
After walking on Carn Bre Crysten and Tôny are back in Camborne.
Tôny:
I’m thirsty.
Crysten:
Yes, I need a drink too.
Tôny:
We must sit down and drink something. Maybe in the coffee shop?
Crysten:
I’d rather buy a canned drink at the baker’s. I’d like to walk some more.
Tôny:
In the coffee shop we can eat as well.
Crysten:
I’m not hungry.
Tôny:
But I’m very hungry.
Crysten:
All the time, apparently. I’ve got a bar of chocolate with me. We can share that.
Tôny:
Well, yes. But I’d prefer to eat a bit more. If we buy a canned drink at the baker’s, I can get a sausage roll with it, and a doughnut.
Crysten:
Oh, I give up! We’d better go to the coffee shop. At least there’s skinny latte at the coffee shop.
Tôny:
And coffee with sweet cream. And a toastie. And a blueberry muffin.
Crysten:
I shall eat a flapjack, that’s all. But it’s healthier, staying away from the baker’s. Coffee then, my only option!
