Exercise 49
The boy chose the biggest doughnut on the plate. It’s the country where his eldest daughter lives. The stupid man’s already bashed the car I sold him last week. It was an occurrence we hadn’t seen before. That’s an aspect of the problem that we didn’t look at carefully. Where are all the cans of beer you bought for us? How can I report things I don’t remember? I barely know half the history you can read about in that library. Where are the materials he’s going to build the shed with? When can we visit the town where your son is studying at university?

Exercise 51
Elen Tonkin is showing Mark the street in Helston where she previously lived.
Elen:
Here’s the house I lived in. I was a child then.
Mark:
Can we go inside?
Elen:
No. There are other people living in it nowadays, obviously.
Mark:
Or maybe into the garden?
Elen:
No we can’t. A person’s garden isn’t a place everyone can go through. Now, look over there. That’s the piece of ground on which we played football.
Mark:
Football? Seriously?
Elen:
Yes! Boys and girls together. And your father was one of the boys I played with. You know that already – it’s an old story.
Mark:
Well, I didn’t believe it until now. That area's very small! The field where I play with my friends is much bigger.
Elen:
We always played very happily just the same. And it’s the place where I met Powl for the first time.
Mark:
When was that?
Elen:
Thirty years ago!
Exercise 52
Elen makes a deal with Danyel for supper.
Danyel:
What’s to eat at supper tonight?
Elen:
Fish, potatoes and green vegetables. A bit of bread and butter.
Danyel:
Oh! Can’t I have baked beans instead of green veg?
Elen:
There’s quite a lot of vitamins in green vegetables.
Danyel:
And in beans too!
Elen:
They have sugar in their tomato sauce. Loads of it. You already eat baked beans very often.
Danyel:
But what if I opt for a few beans today? Not many.
Elen:
Well, okay. If you’re going to eat your green vegetables, you can have a few beans with them.
Exercise 53
Today at the market Mrs Mundy is exploring the toiletries stall.
Trader:
Maybe you wish to buy something for your bathroom?
Mrs Mundy:
I’m only here to have a look.
Trader:
Go ahead. Take a look. As long as you like.
Mrs Mundy:
This bar of fragrant soap. Very nice. What is it?
Trader:
That’s Japanese orange – satsuma. And here’s bubble bath with the same fragrance.
Mrs Mundy:
I’ll take the bubble bath. Just one bottle. Do you have anything with the scent of roses?
Trader:
Toiletries? No. Our soap only comes in fruit fragrances.
Mrs Mundy:
You have this moisturizer. Body yoghurt according to the label on it. Isn’t there anything except this?
Trader:
All our body cream is flower scented – lots of flowers. Yes, this is rose scented, you’re right. Here’s a sample. Try it on a wrist.
Mrs Mundy:
Hmm, all right. If there’s nothing rose scented apart from the moisturizer, let me take one medium size pot of it. It’s better than its name!
