Exercise 11

Elen:

This evening Demelsa will be taking part in the school concert.

Powl:

What time is the event due to begin?

Elen:

Half past seven. Will you be there?

Powl:

Yes. I shall be quite busy all day. But don’t worry. I’ll drive there straight from the office. Then I won’t miss her performance after all those hours of practice!

Elen:

My mother will be arriving at seven to babysit. She’ll put Mark and Danyel to bed if we're still not back.

Powl:

And will they be finishing their homework?

Elen:

That’s for sure. My mother will see to them!

Well, when’s her first piece going to be?

Elen:

Here’s the programme. The quartet will be just before the interval. And the solo piece will be near the end.

Powl:

And when’s the interval? I didn’t eat any supper. A cup of tea and a cake with it will be very welcome.

Elen:

When in the day aren’t you thinking of your stomach?

Powl:

Shh! The orchestra is about to begin.

Elen and Powl have arrived at the concert. They are sitting in Demelsa’s school, listening to the music of the pupils. The children have prepared a range of pieces. Each piece of music is noted in the programme. The name of every child is printed there too. For the most part, the music performed in the concert comprises pieces, either classical or modern, that have been selected by the teachers. But Demelsa chose the music she will present in her violin solo. She is determined to give a good performance. The audience has fallen silent. And now the piece is finished and the people are clapping enthusiastically.
